Worth noting:

  1. Apart from the 4 tones, there's a neutral tone, which is commonly seen in words like 桌子(zhuō zi)
  2. When the word 不 (bù) precedes a fourth tone, 不 changes to second tone ().
  3. The character 一 (yī) change to second tone(一个 ( gè)) when followed by a fourth tone, and fourth tone(一毛 ( máo)) when followed by any other tone(except for in numbers or 第一(dì yī)).
  4. When there are two third tones in a row, the first one becomes second tone. 你好 ( hǎo), note:the rule adopts even though it's not reflected in your books.
