Today, we are going to look at the particles 吗, 吧, and 啊. All three come at the end of a sentence, but what’s the difference between them?

Let’s figure it out with the help of examples:

    ✔你说的是这个字吗?
🔽 Nǐ shuōde shì zhège zì ma?
🔼 Did you say/mean this word?
👉Use 吗 to ask general questions, expecting a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer.

    ✔你说的是这个字吧?
🔽 Nǐ shuōde shì zhège zì ba?
🔼 You said/meant this word, right?
👉Use 吧 when you are 90% sure about the answer, to check if your guess right.

    ✔你说的是这个字啊?
🔽 Nǐ shuōde shì zhège zì a?
🔼 Wow, did you actually say/mean this word? (I thought you said something else)
👉Use 啊 to give your question an air of surprise, as if you didn’t actually expect to hear what you heard.

Now try to finish these sentences:

    1️⃣你买的是这种花✏?我还以为是那种呢。
    2️⃣请问,这儿有公用电话✏?
    3️⃣你那么高兴,考试考得不错✏?
